Overview
- Tool name: Ideogram 4.5
- Developer: Ideogram
- Official model page: https://ideogram.ai/models/4.5
- API reference: https://developer.ideogram.ai/api-reference/images/generate/ideogram-4-5
- Category: AI image models
- Released: September 30, 2026 (launched in the app, API and MCP alongside the official model page)
Ideogram's positioning for 4.5 comes down to one phrase: the most precise edit model. It does not chase "best-looking raw output." It targets a concrete engineering problem - most image models introduce pixel shifts, color drift and texture artifacts on every edit, so by the fifth pass the picture no longer looks like yours. 4.5 is built to stop that accumulation.
Core capabilities
- Drift-free multi-turn editing: in Ideogram's own demonstration, three consecutive edits on one image kept untouched regions 97.5% / 96.2% / 95.5% identical to the previous pass, and 89.2% identical to the original
- Native 2K output across multiple aspect ratios
- Text rendering: Ideogram's long-standing strength. Put the exact words in quotes in your prompt and the model sets them like a designer would, on posters, labels, signage and packaging; editing the wording later keeps style, size and position
- Edit at any resolution: Ideogram demonstrated editing a 4016x6016 (24.2-megapixel) source without downsampling, preserving crop edges so the result stitches seamlessly back into the original
- Two API endpoints:
- `POST /v2/image/generate/ideogram-4-5` - generate from a prompt plus up to 5 optional reference images
- `POST /v2/image/precise-edit/ideogram-4-5` - change part of an existing image while leaving the rest untouched
API pricing (official model page, fixed per image)
| Quality | Generate (prompt only) | Generate (with references) | Precise Edit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Very low | Not available | $0.008 | $0.008 |
| Low | $0.03 | $0.03 | $0.03 |
| Medium | $0.06 | $0.06 | $0.06 |
| High | $0.10 | $0.22 | $0.22 |
The key rule, in Ideogram's own words: each image has a fixed price. It does not change with prompt length, the number of reference images, or the output resolution, and no subscription is required. Same money at 1K and 2K; five references cost the same as one.
That makes budgeting unusually predictable: you pay for output count times quality tier. At Medium, four drafts plus two edits is six billed outputs, or $0.36 per finished image.
Subscriptions (official pricing page)
- Plus: $20/month ($15 equivalent with annual billing), 2,400 priority credits per month
- Pro: $60/month ($42 equivalent annual), 7,500 priority credits per month
- Team: $30 per user/month ($20 equivalent annual), 3,600 priority credits per user per month
- Pay as you go: credit-based, 1 cent per credit
- Free tier: weekly credits when signing in with Google, Apple or Microsoft (amount varies); unlimited slow credits, though AI editing and image-reference features require priority credits
- Commercial use: Ideogram does not claim ownership of generated images; commercial use is permitted (see its Terms of Service)
Licensing and open weights
- Ideogram 4.5 is closed and hosted; Ideogram has said open weights are coming, but none were published at launch and no license was given
- The previous generation, Ideogram 4, did ship open weights (9.3B parameters) - the code under Apache 2.0, but the weights under a non-commercial license. Open weights does not mean commercial rights; this is misread constantly
Who it is for
- Commercial design that gets revised repeatedly: new copy, new colorway, new lighting, untouched pixels stay untouched
- Posters, packaging and signage: quote the words, revise them later without disturbing the layout
- Local edits on large files: edit a high-megapixel source without downsampling, then stitch it back
- E-commerce product imagery: recolor, swap props, relight
Limitations
- Closed source, no self-hosting; open weights not yet released
- High tier with reference images ($0.22) costs more than double High with prompt only ($0.10) - an easy budgeting mistake
- The multi-turn comparison against GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 is Ideogram's own vendor-side test
- AI editing and reference-image features are unavailable in the slow queue
Frequently asked questions
When did Ideogram 4.5 launch?
September 30, 2026, shipping in the Ideogram app, API and MCP on the same day.
How much per image?
Official fixed pricing: Very low $0.008, Low $0.03, Medium $0.06, High $0.10 for prompt-only generation; High is $0.22 for generation with references and for Precise Edit. Price does not vary with prompt length, reference count or resolution, and no subscription is required.
What does drift-free mean?
Most models re-render the entire frame on each edit, so color, texture and position drift pass after pass. Ideogram 4.5 changes only the specified region; Ideogram measures untouched pixels at above 95% identical per pass.
How many reference images?
The generate endpoint accepts up to 5 optional reference images; for editing you upload one image to change plus up to four references.
Can I use it commercially?
Yes - Ideogram does not claim ownership of generated images and permits commercial use (see its Terms of Service).
Are open weights available?
Not as of launch. Ideogram says they are coming, with no date or license stated. Note that Ideogram 4's open release used Apache 2.0 code but non-commercial weights.
