Overview
- Tool name: Krea 2 (K2)
- Developer: Krea
- Official site: https://www.krea.ai
- Official API pricing: https://www.krea.ai/app/api/pricing
- Open weights: Hugging Face (krea/Krea-2-Raw, krea/Krea-2-Turbo) / GitHub (github.com/krea-ai/krea-2)
- Category: AI image models
- License: Krea 2 Community License (commercial use under $1M annual revenue; enterprise license above that)
Krea 2 is Krea's first foundation image model built completely from scratch, aimed at aesthetic diversity, style control and expressive visual direction. Krea had been primarily a creative platform aggregating third-party models; K2 is its first step into in-house models.
Model lineup and official pricing
From the official API pricing page - pay only per generation, no monthly minimum, no seat fees:
| Tier | From | Speed | Native resolution | Positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| K2 Medium Turbo | from $0.015 | about 3s | 1.5K (4K via Enhancer) | fast iteration, lowest cost per K2-quality image |
| K2 Medium | from $0.03 | about 10s | 1.5K (4K via Enhancer) | expressive illustration, balanced cost and quality |
| K2 Large | from $0.06 | about 25s | 2K (4K via Enhancer) | photorealism and highest fidelity |
The official API launch blog adds: text-to-image starts at $0.030 on Medium and $0.060 on Large; adding style references or moodboards moves it to $0.035-$0.040 (Medium) or $0.065-$0.070 (Large), and combining both adds nothing.
Billing rules (official FAQ):
- Billed per generation based on the compute time each request consumes - you pay only for what you generate
- API billing is entirely separate from Krea consumer subscriptions - Pro / Max cover the app only; the API is metered and invoiced separately
- API output is licensed for commercial use, including marketing, products and client work; a few partner-hosted models carry their own terms
- Generating 100K+ images per month qualifies for volume discounts, reserved capacity and SLAs
Open weights: RAW and Turbo
Krea 2 ships as two open checkpoints, both on a 12B DiT backbone:
- Krea 2 RAW: an undistilled base for fine-tuning and LoRA training
- Krea 2 Turbo: an 8-step distilled checkpoint for fast inference
Weights are gated on Hugging Face (krea/Krea-2-Raw, krea/Krea-2-Turbo) with inference code on GitHub. The old Stable Diffusion habit carries over: train your LoRA on RAW, run inference on Turbo.
License terms: the Krea 2 Community License permits commercial use only when total company-wide annual revenue is below $1,000,000 USD; above that you need an enterprise license from opensource@krea.ai. It mirrors Stability's community license structure - open weights is not unconditional commercial rights.
Consumer subscriptions (separate from the API)
| Plan | Price | Credits | Key differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 100 compute units/day | Krea 2 access and real-time models, no credit card; no commercial license |
| Basic | $9/month | 5,000 units/month | commercial license, LoRA training up to 50 images, upscaling to 22K |
| Pro | $35/month | 20,000 units/month | all video models, Nodes/Apps workflow automation, AI Nodes Agent |
| Max | $105/month | 60,000 units/month | unlimited LoRA training (2,000 files), expanded concurrency, unlimited relaxed generations |
| Business | $200/month | 80,000 units/month | team workspace, up to 50 seats, Krea 2 business terms |
Free excludes the full image-model library, all video models, 3D and lipsync, Krea Nodes, relaxed generations and the commercial license.
Who it is for
- Stylized illustration and concept work: K2 Medium is the expressive tier
- Photoreal commercial-looking assets: K2 Large at native 2K
- Teams needing private deployment or customization: RAW weights plus LoRA, free commercial use under $1M revenue
- One-stop multi-model platform: 92 models live on Krea (35 image, 42 video), with K2 alongside Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2, Seedream 5.0 Pro and FLUX.2
- Cost-sensitive high-frequency iteration: Turbo at $0.015 in about 3 seconds
Limitations
- The open-weight commercial threshold is $1M annual revenue, so larger teams must use the API or an enterprise license
- Two separate ledgers - subscription and API - make budgets easy to get wrong
- Published comparisons are largely Krea's own; Krea 2 Large appears as a comparison target in Recraft V4 Styles' third-party blind test
- Turbo is a mid-quality tier, not a final-asset tier
Frequently asked questions
Is Krea 2 open source?
Open weights, not a permissive open-source license. Two checkpoints (RAW and Turbo, 12B DiT) are gated on Hugging Face under the Krea 2 Community License: commercial use under $1M annual revenue, enterprise license above that.
RAW or Turbo?
RAW is the undistilled base for fine-tuning and LoRA training; Turbo is the 8-step distilled build for fast inference. The community pattern is train on RAW, run on Turbo.
How much is the API?
Official pricing: K2 Medium Turbo from $0.015 (about 3s), K2 Medium from $0.03 (about 10s), K2 Large from $0.06 (about 25s). Style references or moodboards add slightly; using both adds nothing further.
Can I use API output commercially?
Yes - Krea states all output generated through its API is licensed for commercial use, including marketing, products and client work.
If I subscribe to Krea Pro, do I still pay for the API?
Yes. Krea states explicitly that API billing is independent of consumer subscriptions, which cover the app and its included compute units only.
What resolution can it reach?
Medium and Medium Turbo are 1.5K native, Large is 2K native; all three can be pushed to 4K through the Enhancer.
