Grok Imagine 2.0 is the current lead model in xAI's image generation and editing family, served through the Imagine API. xAI's documentation uses it as the example model for both generation and editing (third-party reporting places the launch in August 2026; xAI's docs do not date it).
Capabilities
- Text-to-image: configurable aspect ratio, resolution, output count (up to 10 images per request) and response format (URL or base64)
- Image editing: describe the change in natural language; multi-image editing supports up to 5 source images in one request, for combining subjects, transferring styles and composing scenes
- Resolution: 1K and 2K (the pricing table also lists a 1.5K tier), with Low / Medium quality
- Integration: `POST https://api.x.ai/v1/images/generations` and `POST https://api.x.ai/v1/images/edits`; OpenAI-SDK compatible - point `base_url` at `https://api.x.ai/v1` and existing code keeps working
Official pricing (docs.x.ai pricing page)
Media (image) input: $0.01 per image
Output (grok-imagine-image-2.0):
| Resolution | Low | Medium |

The Imagine overview page advertises "$0.04 / image" - that is the 1K plus Low tier. The table above is the full grid.
Older tiers still listed:
- `grok-imagine-image`: input $0.002 per image, output $0.02 at both 1K and 2K
- `grok-imagine-image-quality`: input $0.01 per image, output $0.05 at 1K, $0.06 at 1.5K, $0.07 at 2K
Same-family video: `grok-imagine-video-1.5` at $0.01 per input image, then $0.08/s at 480p, $0.14/s at 720p and $0.25/s at 1080p.
Billing rules (key points from xAI)
1. Image generation uses flat per-image pricing regardless of prompt length - long prompts cost no extra
2. Image edits are billed for both the input image and the generated output image - an edit costs input plus output, so multi-image composition always costs more than an equivalent text-to-image call
3. Video is priced per second, with both duration and resolution driving the total
Rule 2 is the one that breaks budgets: a three-source composite costs three inputs plus one output, not one output.
Who it is for
- Projects already on xAI: same API key and base URL as the Grok text models, lowest integration cost
- Bulk drafts: up to 10 images per request, at $0.04 each for 1K Low
- Multi-image composition and style transfer: up to 5 references per request
- Agent workflows: xAI's server-side `image_generation` tool is billed at Imagine API rates, letting Grok produce images autonomously inside a conversation
Limitations
- Closed source, no weights, no self-hosting
- 2K maximum - there is no 4K tier; look elsewhere (Nano Banana Pro, SD4 Ultra) for that
- Edits bill input and output, making multi-source composition materially more expensive than single-image generation
- No independent benchmark published; judge quality on your own test set
